of the administration who came forward to give a speech about it. this past spring it was john brennan who gave the first ever u.s. policy address, admitting to some of our drone strikes. and defending them as both wise and legal. john brennan also this part fall told the "washington post" this -- "i think the rule should be that if we're going to take actions overseas that result in the deaths of people the united states should take responsibility for that. we should. but we don't. at least not for all of the drone strikes that we launch. the deniable drone strikes, the ones the u.s. does not take responsibility for, the ones the u.s. does not admit to even though everybody knows we're responsible for them, those are the ones that are committed as covert action. they're the ones that are launched by the cia. as john brennan has now been nominated to head the cia, he's being described as somebody who wants to bring this policy out of the dark. not that he wants to stop killing people using this particular tool, but he thinks we should do it in a way that is more accountable. he specifically thi

, john kerry, even though it's not susan rice, but also john brennan compared to four years ago. jim jones did not work out. there was secretary gates at defense that was brought over from the bush administration before him. and so i think in many ways this sort of demonstrates that the president feels he'll put his imprint on foreign policy going forward from him. hillary clinton a choice that some may have viewed as a concession of secretary of state and worked out well for both sides. >> david, you know, chuck hagel has gotten some opposition from the left and the right. do you expect in a second term now elected and safe obama might get some more opposition from the left, from democrats? i'm thinking maybe on drones or extra judicial killing or some of the things that maybe some liberals had been quieter on waiting for obama to get re-elected? >> i think that's definitely a big issue. you know, looking at the picks that the president announced yesterday for national security team, i think what you are seeing is obama administration sort of trying to reshape how they think about t

ceiling to deal with and now these nominations of chuck hagel and john brennan over to the defense department and cia. so now, it is a question of how much time they have, but a lot of people will be watching, does harry reid make that time? >> some states are taking this one step further, proposing state laws that would make it criminal for a doctor like yourself to ask a patient. you could lose your medical license for asking, is that correct? >> yeah, it was even more than that in the original version of the bill down in florida, for example. and there are seven other states like this. the original version is that you could impose jail time for simply asking. so a physician asking a patient about guns could land them in jail, according to the original version. there was a scaled back version that was subsequently put forward, that you could still lose your medical license, you could get financial penalties. that was subsequently overturned by a federal judge, but it's being appealed. so, yes, it could be even a step further in some of these states, even a step further than what'

. obama counterterrorism adviser john brennan has made the legal case for targeted killings. some are now expressing concern over brennan in charge of the cia. and scott horton of harper's magazine reports "and the drones are just the beginning of it. the cia has its toe there, but we're going to see the cia probably take a very prominent role in robotic warfare." i'm joined tonight by greenwald, producer, director, and founder of brave new films. he is also the director of an upcoming documentary film "drones exposed" and just completed a trip to the country of pakistan. mr. greenwald, good to have you with us tonight. will there be an issue at brennan's confirmation hearings? what is the likelihood of the senate forcing a debate on drone strikes? there has been very little conversation about it. >> yes. it's actually been very sad, ed, to see how there has almost been a bipartisan silence on this issue. we're hopeful that as we educate people, as people hear more about the drones, as they learn more about them, they will call their senators and they'll say it's essential to ask brennan
